What a French drain actually does

A French drain is for water under the surface: a trench with perforated pipe wrapped in clean stone and filter fabric, sloped to a discharge point. It intercepts subsurface flow — the water that keeps soil perpetually saturated, seeps into crawlspaces, and makes ground squish days after rain. Done right (fabric-wrapped, verified slope, real outlet) it works invisibly for decades. Typical Chattanooga installs run $2,000–$8,000 depending on length, depth, and discharge distance.

What a dry creek bed actually does

A dry creek bed handles water on the surface: a shaped, stone-armored channel that catches sheet flow and moves it where you want it, at a speed that doesn't cut gullies. It shines on lots that receive hillside runoff — very Chattanooga — and it's the rare drainage fix that's also a landscape feature. Cost usually lands between $1,500 and $7,000 depending on length and stone choice.

The diagnostic question: where is your water?

Watch your yard during a hard rain (or right after). Water flowing across the surface — sheeting off a slope, cutting little channels, carrying mulch — is a surface problem: dry creek bed, swale, or both. Ground that stays saturated long after the rain stops, with no visible flow — that's subsurface: French drain. A musty crawlspace with no surface ponding is almost always subsurface. Erosion gullies are almost always surface.
